Winter 2012 :: YES! National Student Writing Competition  

Dear Educator,

I know that fitting extra projects into your curriculum is challenging. But here’s an opportunity that not only will push your students’ writing and critical thinking, but will also meet Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for Reading: Informational Text, and Writing.

We run the YES! National Student Writing Competition three times a year—essentially each school quarter. Teachers tell us the contest gives their students more drive to write because they know that editors from a real magazine will review their work.

This winter, students will read and respond to the YES! article, “What’s the Harm in Hunting?” The controversial issue of hunting will give your students plenty to think and write about. The deadline for submitting essays is March 31. See competition details below.

Essays from our Fall 2011 winners will be featured in our February 2012 newsletter.

Student Writing Competition  

YES! National Student Writing Competition logo Motivate Student Writing, Meet Common Core Standards

The YES! National Student Writing Competition is an opportunity for middle school through university students to write for a real audience—not just you, the teacher—and the chance to be published by an award-winning magazine.

Each quarter, students are invited to read and write an essay on a selected YES! Magazine article. We divide contestants into four categories: middle school, high school, university, and Powerful Voice (for authors whose essays are powerful and passionate). Winning essays in each category are published on the YES! Magazine website.

  • You must be a classroom teacher—homeschool cooperatives and resource centers included—for your students to participate.
  • Register for the competition no later than March 2.
  • Have your students read the YES! article, “What’s the Harm in Hunting?” by Alyssa B. Johnson. Alyssa’s article is about her venture into the wild with a hunter whom she trusted, and her own reflections about the morality of hunting.
  • Your students should write a persuasive essay of up to 700 words answering the question: “Is hunting moral?”
  • This essay meets Common Core State Standards W.1, W.7, and W.9 for Writing, and RI.1 and RI.8 for Reading: Informational Text.
  • Teachers may submit up to three student essays. Students may not independently enter their essays.
