YES! Magazine’s Multimedia Editorial Intern assists the lead designer and editors with multimedia reporting and graphic production for This intern will also assist with researching, editing, and posting articles with a focus on digital packaging and communication.

YES! Magazine is a nonprofit, independent media organization based near Seattle. We do explanatory journalism with a focus on solutions, covering climate justice, economic inequality, racial justice, and democratic reform. Our 14-person editorial team publishes daily online at We publish an award-winning quarterly print magazine. When we won the Utne Media Award for General Excellence, judges called our unique approach to solutions journalism “inspiring and essential.” We have produced award-winning multimedia special reports and video stories, and we are increasing our commitment to excellence in this area.

Interns can expect to leave the program with a wide range of marketable skills and many clips. We'll work with you to bring your work to the next level and to publish and promote it. We will support your interest in exploring innovative new platforms for visual thinking.


What you’ll be doing:

The YES! multimedia intern will report to the lead designer. You will receive guidance and hands-on training in all aspects of multimedia development for a news organization: filming and editing video, recording audio, creating motion graphics, reporting and writing for broadcast and social media. Many YES! stories involve data visualization, so you’ll also get experience collaborating with editors to develop charts and infographics. If design by coding is your thing, our immersive web special reports require  HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. We will orient our assignments around your interests and make sure your experience stays exciting.


Interns are key members of the editorial team and active participants in regular strategy-building meetings. They are invited to attend and contribute to organizational board meetings and all-staff retreats. We place a high value on their input.


Time commitment:

This internship requires a time commitment of 24 hours per week for a duration of six months. This duration makes sure that there’s enough time for you to build skills to a point of fluency, and then produce a number of strong packages.


We are looking for interns with:

  • Recording and editing skills in video, audio, and/or motion graphics with attention to details and accuracy
  • Basic knowledge of HTML/CSS/JavaScript is a plus
  • Previous experience in journalism/media environment a plus.
  • A demonstrated interest in the topics we cover, including climate justice, economic inequality, racial justice, and democratic reform.
  • Excellent self-starter with the ability to work effectively independently and see projects through from conception to completion.
  • Excellent communication skills for a collaborative team environment.
