Volunteer Opportunities

Our committed volunteers in our Bainbridge offices and across the country support our mission in many ways. Here is how you can, too.

Volunteer Opportunities at Our Offices

Are you looking for ways to be actively involved with your community while spending time with fun and engaging people?

We often have local volunteer opportunities in our office on Bainbridge Island, such as ongoing mailroom support, tabling for YES! events, and various other needs that come up throughout the year.

In return, you'll enjoy spending time in a welcoming work environment, and can join us for our daily brown bag lunch if you like. You'll be helping us with our mission of building a more just, sustainable, and compassionate world, and you'll get a free subscription to YES! for as long as you volunteer with us.

For local volunteering, contact our office manager, Clo Copass, at ccopass [at] yesmagazine.org, or call Gretchen at 206/842-0216.

Volunteer Where You Live

Don’t live in the local area? No problem! When a YES! staff or board member is speaking at a conference, we ask local volunteers to staff a YES! table or booth at that conference. It is a great way to meet other YES! readers, like-minded individuals, and people curious about YES! magazine.

After you sign up to be a volunteer, we will call you when there is a YES! speaker in your area. Some things you may want to know about being a Conference Volunteer:

  • Tables are usually staffed by two volunteers. YES! office staff sends you all the materials you will need to staff a YES! table.

  • You need to staff the table during all conference breaks, but can attend sessions you signed up for.
  • YES! supplies free reprints and literature as well as sample copies of YES! for people to look at.
  • Magazines and subscriptions are for sale, so the volunteer is responsible for receiving and keeping track of money.
  • The YES! speaker or organizer is often a good source of information as well as conversation.

To volunteer for tabling, contact our Media and Outreach Manager, Susan Gleason, at sgleason [at] yesmagazine.org.

Help Spread the Word

Encourage libraries to carry YES!

By assuring that local libraries carry and display YES!, you achieve one of the most effective ways to reach large numbers of people in your area.

  • Call or visit libraries (public, private, and school) in your community.
  • Identify yourself as a subscriber to YES! (not a salesperson).
  • Ask if they carry YES! If they do, express your appreciation. If not, leave a copy with the acquisition librarian.
  • Mention that YES! is listed in both the EBSCO Catalog of Periodicals for Public Libraries and the Librarian's Handbook.
  • Be sure to tell them that YES! was recommended in the December 2000 issue of Library Journal, which stated "... this is an important journal for those interested in a progressive future ..."

Help create retail demand for YES!

By asking for it at your local retail periodical outlets. Inquire at grocery stores, book stores, and newsstands. Places that carry other progressive publications such as Utne Reader, The Nation, or Mother Jones are good places to start. Distributors of periodicals want to provide retailers with high-demand publications that promise to sell well. By asking if they carry YES!, you can help create that demand.

Share YES! with Friends, Schools, Family

Lend your copy to a friend or work colleague.

You may be planting a seed at just the right time to make a real difference.

Help us grow our Education Program.

Know a teacher? YES! contains features that make the world come alive to students. We have a special program for using YES! in the classroom, so tell an interested teacher to check out our website for details.

Can you bear to part with your own copy?

If so, when you finish reading your latest issue of YES! magazine, pass it on. Leave a copy with a local official, in the waiting room of a health professional, at a favorite coffee shop, or other gathering place. If you can't bear to part with your copy, you can order additional copies of most back issues from our store.

Give the gift of YES!

You can give gift subscriptions at generously reduced rates to friends, family, business associates, or classmates. A subscription to YES! makes a great gift for holidays, birthdays, inspiration, or for sharing something you value with someone you value. This last holiday season alone, the YES! subscription staff processed more than 1,600 gift subscriptions!
