"I'd really, really love to be there," McKibben says of the World People's Conference on Climate Change in Cochabamba, Bolivia. "Where you are right now is the center of the world when it comes to dealing with the biggest problem we've ever faced." The author and leader of 350.org sends words of encouragement to the citizen activists who amassed in the Bolivian city to craft a more meaningful and inclusive response to climate change than that which came out of the UN climate summit in Copenhagen.
McKibben recently releases a new book, Eaarth: Making a Life on a Tough New Planet. The tougher, hotter planet he describes is what the summit's participants hope to avoid—but McKibben cautions that that may only happen if movements like the one in Cochabamba succeed. "We have to go on building this movement," he says, "and building it as fast and as hard as we can."
