Making a Living (Economy)

We’re wasting our resources subsidizing a war economy, sprawl, and consumerism. What we could do differently in a living economy.

This is the eighteenth of a series of blogs based on excerpts adapted from the 2nd edition of Agenda for a New Economy: From Phantom Wealth to Real Wealth. I wrote Agenda to spur a national conversation on economic policy issues and options that are otherwise largely ignored. This blog series is intended to contribute to that conversation. —DK

In a world rushing toward environmental and social collapse, there is no place for war, speculation, auto-dependent sprawl, toxic contamination, and wasteful consumption —activities that generate a major portion of current GDP. This massive misallocation of resources is an artifact of a mistaken belief that human prosperity is maximized by unrestrained global competition for resources, markets, and money to drive growth in the consumption of whatever goods and services generate the greatest private financial profit.

The living economy frame shifts the focus from making money to making a living. This simple shift in perspective shines a spotlight on the many ways we can simultaneously improve the quality of our lives while reducing our human burden on the biosphere. For example:

Unrealistic? Perhaps. But so is the assumption we humans can continue our current path of military conflict, sprawl, auto dependence, consumerism, and toxic pollution and still have a livable future.

Consider the possibilities for shifting resources from destructive to beneficial uses:

Real Security: The United States faces no credible conventional military threat from any nation. Our primary military threats are from a handful of terrorists armed with little more than a willingness to die for their cause. Yet we devote more than half of the federal government’s discretionary budget to the military, an amount roughly equal to the military expenditure of all the world’s governments combined.

Real Security
Climate change is teaching military leaders to rethink security.

Our most certain security threats come from human-induced climate chaos and the related food insecurity, economic dependence on oil, shortages of freshwater, extreme inequality and disintegration of the social fabric, catastrophic health care costs, and a predatory financial system.

Reducing our need to expropriate the resources of others to maintain our material extravagance will be a far more effective counter to terrorism than military occupation of countries like Iraq and Afghanistan. Rolling back our military commitment will free up real resources to address the real threats to our security.

Healthy Communities: Sprawling low-density, auto-dependent exurbs populated with poorly insulated homes and unsightly strip malls consume prime agricultural and forest lands, reduce food security, increase infrastructure costs, reduce aquifer regeneration, increase dependence on foreign oil, generate pollution, and dehumanize us by isolating us from one another and from nature. We can reconfigure and retrofit our built environment to restore green spaces and create walkable, high density communities served by clean and efficient public transportation. This will eliminate the need for most private vehicles; recover land needed for agriculture, forests, and natural habitat; reduce commuting time; purify our air and water; minimize dependence on fossil fuels; and restore the relationships of community essential to human health and happiness.

Liberated Culture: Wall Street maintains its hold on our minds by the constant bombardment of our eyes and ears with paid messages crafted by communications professionals to manipulate our sense of who we are, what we value, and what gives us pleasure. The goal is to manipulate our minds to get us to buy products we don’t really want or need and to vote for politicians who serve interests other than our own.

I don’t get a tax deduction for exercising my free speech rights. Why should a corporation?

The manufactured messages are so pervasive that it becomes difficult to know our real selves, our real values, and the real sources of our well-being and happiness. We end up devoting our lives to serving the corporate drive for ever expanding profits at the expense of democracy, happiness, our humanity, and the future of our children.

Market theory assumes that the business role is to respond to consumer preferences, not dictate them. Let’s give it a try in the living economy world.

An advertising ban would raise complex free speech issues. There is nothing in the Constitution, however, that says expenditures on speech must be tax deductible. Let advertising expense beyond providing basic information on product availability and specifications come from after-tax revenues. I don’t get a tax deduction for exercising my free speech rights. Why should a corporation?

Far from imposing sacrifice, the transition from the Wall Street suicide economy to Main Street living economies can at once increase our security, health, and happiness while reducing advertising pollution and our burden on the biosphere. It will surely reduce the paychecks of Wall Street bankers and traders, but it is a major upside opportunity for the rest of us.

economic solutions for environment and living

Posted by Michael at May 14, 2011 08:59 PM
This discussion of how government must restructure how the wealth and equity in this country is shared is a noble and fair pursuit. But it is clear to me that we must also empower ourselves and others to take control of our own future. The current state of politics and government today is so corrupted by special and self interests that equity and fairness is not likely to come through government. We have to look to our communities and like minded people. I suggest that organizing and moving toward economic systems within our communities, person to person is our most hopeful near future solution. We have to take back the control over our lives by creating a new economy based on a different set of principals like empathy, truth and fairness, social and environmental consciousness. This will not happen through the current political structure of government. Removing the self interest and profit motive will be very difficult and there is not enough time to wait for this to happen. We must create and embrace alternatives to the current status quo. We have to be honest with ourselves and tell the truth about how things really are today. Alternative methods for employment including entrepreneurial creativity is our hope for breaking the chains of the corporate grip over our lives. The profit at any cost mentality must change or there is no hope for economic equity or environmental sustainability. Politics and government as it has evolved today will only change when people take charge of their own economic future by demanding fairness, honesty and equity through their wallets.
We have to support a fair and conscious alternative economy so it can become the mainstream economy.

Bringing everyone together

First off - I am so impressed with David Korten's deep insights into our current ecomonic and social dilemmas. The work of Yes Magazine ia also so important to increasing awareness to the masses.
There are so many diverse groups working to achieve similar goals - somehow we need to bring it all together -
efforts like www.globalonenessproject.org , playingforchange.net , etc are all bringing the world toward a better place - but it seems to me we need to combine our efforts so we have more force and power against the "forces of evil" that control so much of the wealth, power, and media. Somehow we need to put all our voices in one basket and make the change happen.

I am looking forward to attending your 15th birthday party~ See you there! DWS

Our congress/president/cabinet/ are NOT acting like a american government- american government is a business and taxpayers - work- pay, and then congress raise ceing- borrows more-- then gives billions away free to free foreign aid-- WHY, when they should be " loan all of it as a " loan with interest returns- or trades goods. afterall -- most nations we give too- have all rich resources- gold palaces- oil- land- even if usa needs nations to keep peace-- we should NEVER pay for it-- should --loan it-- gee unless american taxpayers want to be "" slaveworkers for other nations war problems, ?? usa should loan WITH interest- get out of debt. now-- or we all will be 28 trillion in debt by 2025.

Congress get off the cross americans need the wood

2. DoNot tax small businesses- we need JOBS. Allow more Exportes. trade.
3. PAY Raise Freeze on congress-president, fed. employee for 10 years. and
4. - Price Freeze on all Gasoline/and imported goods- 6 moneths.
5. Social Security- LEAVE IT ALONE- congress has "Borrow from it" its a 3% trust returns. SEC. 201 act.

6. STOP ALL "FREE" FOREIGN AID- LOAN OUR RESOURCES, TRADE SUPPLYS FOR OIL, LOAN WITH INTEREST RETURNS- GET PAYED, GET OUT OF DEBT. OR GET VOTED OUT OF OFFICE. STOP GIVEN AMERICANS LIVES SUPPLYS FREE-- LOAN THAT 129.5 BILLION IN AID-- GET PAYED BACK- STOP GETTING USA IN DEBT.

BOOKLET FOR SALE 1/2 PRICE-- ONLY 64.5 BILLION-- HALF OF 129.5 BILLION CONGRESS GIVES FREE FOREIGN AID.

QUESTION--- IF CONGRESS CAN GIVE "FREE FOREIGN AID TO OTHER NATIONS, SHOULD "LOAN IT ALL WITH INTEREST RETURNS- AND WE WOULD NOT BE IN THIS DEBT MESS. IF THEY CAN AFFORD THAT MUCH FREE TO OTHER NATIONS THEN WHY ARE THEY CUTTING AMERICANS PEOPLES MEDICARE?????

Follow through with the plan

There is a plan for taxation that is already in the mill. It's called the FairTax, and it is a sales tax to replace income taxes. The farce of graduated income taxes is a disinformation campaign and shifting of responsibility. The real responsibility for consumerism is the consumer. The income tax allows the real costs to be externalized and paid but the decisions which drive the corporations and government to pursue capitalist policies of Imperialism and advertising are actually made at the checkout lines. The FairTax is the Republican answer to complex income taxes. A prebate makes it progressive. How progressive and how effective it will be as a deterrent to consumerism is a matter of negotiating the rate. Call the bluff of the system and give people the immediate feedback they need to stop giving their money to TPTB. The FAILURE mode of the FairTax would be that people start trading in black markets (localization) and the government goes bankrupt. The success mode would be that people continue to live much as they have, but at least they will pay the true costs of government and subsidies, and hopefully, make better choices with that information directly in front of them at every purchase. The rich get richer because we buy their stuff. If you want Change, keep it in your pocket. The democracy is alive and well: one dollar, one vote: and the votes are counted by businesses.

Supply and Demand

Basic economic returns- on the circle of life.
Lets just say- congress cuts into Social Security, and Medicare, How many people will spend money- go to Doctors, buy food, shows, shoes, dine out, travel, buy cars and homes, So all that money ,health aid will NOT be put back into economic circle, plus JOBS.
BIG business is NOT always the giver of a secure Job growth. Inturn our congress giving FREE foreign aid in billion, getting nothing in return ,but bad percent in deficit debts. When it could turn it all around by -- tradeing-loan our resources, as in military aid, supplys-loan with interest returns- put th billions, turn it into billion return plus for our economic well being.
More tax cuts for the Wealthy does not give more jobs all the time- HOW THAT WORKN SO FAR- ITS NOT- THER BY raise taxes small @/or $ % -and cut spending- cut out - FREE foreign aid- loan ita all with interest returns is a start in right directions.
