Infographic: Does Congress Look Like America?

There are 469 seats in the U.S. Congress up for election this November 8th. This infographic explores how the demographics of Congress compare to America at large.

In 2012, 79 percent of the Senate were white males, while only 32 percent of the overall American population reflected this demographic. This infographic, created by Take Part, highlights how, in many ways, Congress does not look like America.

Use it to get students thinking about why Congress looks like it does, how representation impacts whose voice is heard, and how decisions are made. For example—if Congress is mostly comprised of men, how does this impact decisions on women's issues?
