Costa Rica tops the 2009 Happy Planet Index, which takes into consideration factors such as a country's ecological footprint and life expectancies. Susan Hardman, an English teacher at a university in northwest China, traveled to the country in April of 2008 and set out to document daily life in Costa Rica. "I love making connections, if even for a brief moment, with people I photograph," she says.
