Ireland Votes to Legalize Gay Marriage

Ireland makes history by legalizing gay marriage—reminding people that change is possible.

Over the weekend Ireland became the first country in the world to constitutionally legalize gay marriage by popular vote. On Saturday, government officials announced the decision, which was passed by more than 60 percent of voters.

“With today’s vote we have disclosed who we are: a generous, compassionate, bold, and joyful people,” said Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny. “Yes to inclusion, yes to generosity, yes to love, yes to equal marriage.”
