How We Can Do It: How to get free of nuclear weapons

The United States, as the owner of the biggest nuclear arsenal, must take the initiative and lead the world to take these steps:

1. De-alert. 
   Take nuclear weapons off high alert; separate warheads from missiles.
2. No First Use. 
   Agree to binding bans on first use of nuclear weapons.
3. No New Weapons.
   Ban research and development of all new nuclear weapons.
4. Ban Nuclear Testing Forever. 
   Bring into force the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty.
5. Control Nuclear Material. 
   Create a verifiable treaty to bring all weapons-grade nuclear material and the technology to create it under strict international control.
6. Nuclear Weapons Convention. 
   Start negotiations, as required by the Non-Proliferation Treaty, for the phased, verifiable and irreversible elimination of weapons.
7. Resources for Peace. 
   Spend the tens of billions now spent for nuclear arms on national and global humanitarian projects.
