Test of Will and War: Australia

The community-based theatre project Maralinga tells the story of the Australian and British soldiers deployed in support of the British nuclear tests in Australia. In the Ettalong War Memorial Club production of Maralinga, veterans and their wives describe the toxic legacy of the nuclear tests.

This photo-essay features images from William Cleveland's book Art and Upheaval. The book tells remarkable stories about artists who resolve conflict, heal unspeakable trauma, give voice to the forgotten and disappeared, and restitch the cultural fabric of their communities.
