#7 :: Sustainable Fisheries
posted Nov 17, 2006
In 1993, the Cape Cod Commercial Hook Fishermen‘s Association (CCCHFA) was founded in response to declining fish populations. The nonprofit association works with a 40-member fleet that uses conservative harvesting practices and distributes catch quotas cooperatively. The CCCHFA encourages science- and community-based management to ensure fish populations for future generations. The CCCHFA helps to involve the local fleet in decision-making, cooperative research, and educational programs. On Earth Day 2006, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration recognized the CCCHFA for responsible stewardship with a National Environmental Hero award.
