"The vast majority of protesters chose nonviolence. Some marched, some interfered with attempts by WTO delegates to reach the conference venue by blocking the streets. The so-called "black block" was a small group, who broke windows. The pervasive violence came from the police, who beat, pepper sprayed, and tear gassed protesters."
—Sarah van Gelder, YES! Executive Editor

"I have to admit I stayed on the periphery of the tear-gassing events, which, when I was there, were happening around 4th or 5th Avenue and Pike or Union. Close enough to get a bit of a notion of the sting of the stuff. And right where the direct action medics were bringing people out of the crowd to flood their eyes with water they poured out of big plastic soft-drink bottles."
—Doug Pibel, YES! Managing Editor
