Seattle has become a leader in LEED certified buildings. The City Council played an important part in this achievement.

Seattle has one of the largest stocks of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified buildings in the country. Conlin said the city uses its power as both a regulator and an economic force to push the rest of the city and region to adopting greener building styles and methods.
Richard Conlin gave this speech to a Sustainable Bainbridge gathering on October 9, 2008 at Islandwood. Conlin is the president of the Seattle City Council and a member of YES! Magazine's board of directors.
Sustainable Bainbridge is an organization of community leaders in Bainbridge Island, WA, YES! Magazine's hometown. The organization aims to protect and strengthen the island community's social, environmental, and economic sustainability for current and future generations.
