Humberto Ríos Labrada is leading a transformation in Cuban farming. The country's soil, which had been depleted using Soviet farming methods, ruined the country's biodiversity.
Through the work of Labrada, seed diversity and organic farming are weaving their way back into the Cuban agricultural system. Putting scientists and farmers side by side, Labrada says, has been the greatest learning experience of the project.
Labrada is the recipient of the 2010 Goldman Environmental Prize for his work.
