Without a Car in the World

Photo Essay: Los Angelenos tell stories of living car-free in the city.

No-Car-Play-Button.jpg

Car-free in LA, photo by Diane MeyerPhotographer Diane Meyer set out to capture the inspiring and courageous citizens of L.A. who decided to rid themselves of the symbol of American freedom—the automobile. The following photo essay is a small sample of the nearly 100 people Meyer hoped to interview for the project.

Meyer writes: "through images and text from the interviews, the project will address how car culture has shaped psychological, spatial, and geographic perceptions of the city." The purpose of the project is to then "provide a voice to a group of individuals often perceived to be disenfranchised in some way for not having an automobile."

Tools to Live Car Free

Great coverage on those willing to take the car-free plunge, especially in Automobile Mecca. Some people and families find the traditional carrying capacity of regular bikes limiting, that's why we developed the FreeRadical. It can convert most any adult bicycle into a 200-lb cargo carrying bicycle. Find us on facebook to see if an Xtracycle might help you start riding, and living, car-lite and car-free!

I've been commuting to work for over a year without a car. I've recently upgraded to an Xtracycle and I'm enjoying it. I think every family should try out an Xtracycle.
