The theme of this year’s festival is community building. Similar to a barn raising, this homegrown, hands-on, human-powered festival offers visitors the chance to come together for a day of work and play to help create a more sustainable community.
Attendees will learn about money-saving community solar installations, urban farming, rain gardens and cisterns, health and well-being, and alternative forms of transportation.
Visitors can test-drive electric and cargo bikes, enjoy solar mini-car races, participate in do-it-yourself workshops, and get rewarded for earth-friendly new habits.
An Undriver Licensing Station™, the PCC Kid Picks Mobile, a Bike Works Family Bike Expo, and a Wi-Fi cafe on a new RapidRide bus will also be on site.
There’s lots of family-friendly fun in store, too. Attendees can taste fresh cider, visit real chickens and rabbits, play games and win prizes, learn about healthy choices, listen to solar-powered live music, and sample delicious local food.

Democracy Now! Café
Throughout the Festival, we will screen thematic interviews from the Democracy Now! film archives. This will take place in a pre-theater slot at 6pm. Refreshments will be available to help you beat the heat, while activating your political psyche.
Artist Residencies
During their week-long residencies, IMPACT 2012 Resident Artists discuss, create, and rehearse new work surrounding the week’s topics. Each week will culminate in a free public presentation of the new works-in-progress. July 21 & 28, Aug. 4, 11, 18; 7:00pm.

Alternate ROOTS is an organization based in the Southern USA whose mission is to support the creation and presentation of original art, in all its forms, which is rooted in a particular community of place, tradition or spirit. As a coalition of cultural workers they strive to be allies in the elimination of all forms of oppression. ROOTS is committed to social and economic justice and the protection of the natural world and addresses these concerns through its programs and services.
ROOTS Fest 2011: Many Communities, One Voice is a music, arts and community festival and much more. It seeks to heal, empower and unite Baltimore through the celebration of arts and culture. For five days in June, tens of thousands of people will make history at this event. Joined by nationally-renowned artists and performers, the West Baltimore community will fill the neighborhood with new life, color and music. ROOTS Fest 2011 will serve as an example for other communities around the country who face the same challenges as West Baltimore.
ROOTS Fest kicks off with Arts, Culture & Creativity: A National Learning Exchange, a three-day national dialog on art, culture, community organizing and empowerment. This event, taking place June 22-24, is an opportunity for collaboration between artists, community members, elected leaders and many more. This exchange will be followed by a weekend of free events at the outdoor festival.

]]>The HONK! Festival is a grassroots, non-profit event made possible by the financial and in-kind support of a thousand local residents and businesses. For the duration of the Festival, more than 350 musicians will be housed by generous neighbors and friends and many local restaurants will generously provide food for the performers and volunteers. Scores of community members have donated hours of labor to make HONK! possible. Most significantly, none of the bands will be earning any money for the festival, and most will have only some of their travel expenses covered. The bands are inspired to travel great distances, at great personal expense, to joyously celebrate our hard work to reclaim public space—the world over—for all people. The bands long to connect in honor of our struggles for justice. We hope you will come, to connect and celebrate with us, and further the cause of freedom, justice and collective emancipation.

Workshops for all ages will be available throughout the day, along with exhibits, music, food, and kids activities, with entertainment by Artis The Spoon Man.
Keynote speaker for the Renewable Living Fair will be Vicki Robin, an advocate of simple living, and the author of the best selling, Your Money or Your Life. Vicki has appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show, Good Morning America, and National Public Radio.
The Local Garden and Farm Panel will include Tristan Klesick, from Klesick Family Farm, Laura McCrae, from Urban Hennery, and Andrew Stout, from Full Circle Farm.
Join in a free incandescent light bulb exchange, and participate in a seed swap. Learn about raising healthy families, neighborhood gardens, backyard chickens, low impact entertainment, and cheap transportation, plus much more.

What could be more environmentally friendly than good old fashion, foot-stomping, acoustic music? Fiddles and banjos will fill the air as several groups bring the heritage of homegrown, American music to Kitsap County. The “Festival Within a Festival” on Saturday will feature such bands as the Cascade Mountain Boys, a northwest staple in bluegrass music, with instrument workshops conducted by national flat-picking champion, Roger Ferguson, and Bluegrass Hall of Famer, Terry Enyeart. A covered area will be set aside for anyone interested in “jamming” with other musicians or just learning a little more about the genre.
The festival will also feature a trash art contest, with ribbons awarded in several age categories, from age five on up to adults.
Green Technology at the Festival: Scores of exhibitors will showcase green technology, green products, environmental education, experimental vehicles and local handmade crafts. The Black Bear conversation cafe tent will offer panel discussions and small-group exchanges with prominent authorities on a variety of environmental topics.
Sponsors: The Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe has joined with the Kitsap Sun, Wet Apple Media (publishers of the Kitsap Business Journal), Puget Sound Energy and the Kitsap Board of Commissioners as a major sponsor of this year’s Great Peninsula Future Festival.
