Join us for the Northwest Book Tour of 'This Changes Everything: Occupy Wall Street and the 99% Movement'!

This newly-published anthology, edited by Sarah Van Gelder of Bainbridge Island, co-founder and executive editor of YES! Magazine,
is one of the first primers and printed accounts of the movement that
arose in this country this past year. The Occupy Wall Street movement named the core issue of our time: the
overwhelming power of Wall Street and large corporations—something the
political establishment and most media have long ignored.

But the
movement goes far beyond this critique. This Changes Everything shows
how the movement is shifting the way people view themselves and the
world, the kind of society they believe is possible, and their own
involvement in creating a society that works for the 99% rather than
just the 1%.

In This Changes Everything, the editors of YES! Magazine bring together
voices from inside and outside the protests to convey the issues,
possibilities, and personalities associated with the Occupy Wall Street
movement.

Contributors to the book include
Naomi Klein, Rebecca Solnit, Ralph Nader, David Korten, and others,
along with early Occupy activists such as David Graeber (speaking at Elliott
Bay Books later in the month, on January 25), Marina Stern, and Hena Ashraf. It offers insights for those actively protesting or
expressing support for the movement—and for the millions more who
sympathize with the goal of a more equitable and democratic future.

This evening should
be a great way to look at the Occupy movement to date, and how things might develop
in an eventful year ahead.

This is not about telling people to deprive themselves and have less,
but to replace the destructive behaviors that are ruining our
environment with behavior that’s better for both the planet and people.
Over 30,000 people in every corner of the globe have participated in a
low-impact living experiment of their very own through the No Impact
Week. Now it’s your turn!

Beginning Sunday, September 18th
participants will work through a series of eight daily challenges, from
decreasing trash production to eating locally and sustainably.

Start the New Year right: Join YES! Magazine readers and staff, and the “No Impact Project” for a week-long experiment with a radically greener way of life.

You’ll answer questions like:

How well can I live without modern “conveniences?”

Which expenses actually make me happy, and improve my family's quality of life?

Which ones just eat away at my time and money?

What does my carbon footprint really look like?

The No Impact Project was conceived by Colin Beavan, following the success of his blog, book, and film, No Impact Man. He chronicled his family’s year-long experiment in zero-waste living in New York City. Now Colin and YES! Magazine are inviting you to join in the experiment for just one week, beginning January 2.

No Impact Week is an 8-day opportunity for individuals and groups to experiment with low-impact living. It's a challenge for most people, but also a great way to understand what we really use, what changes we can make, and our own limits. As a media partner, YES! has committed to developing some new content during the week of January 2nd that is relevant to the themes of the week, including lowering use of energy and fossil fuels and eating locally. We'd love to get a range of bloggers who volunteer to take on the full week experiment, or at least whatever part of it they can manage to commit to. This might mean that someone decides they can just focus on food or energy. We're not necessarily looking for experts or people who are already well-versed in low-impact living. In fact, the fresher they are to some of the ideas, the more engaging their blog entries might be. Entries can involve anything from writing one post about one day, to doing short video-pods on little changes individuals can make, to trying to engage family and/or community in the project. There's really a lot of space for creativity.

The Economics of Happiness - Seattle Screening, Global Tour

A film on building local economies by Helena Norberg-Hodge, Steven Gorelick, and John Page, with guest panels and community discussions in multiple cities.

The Economics of Happiness describes a world moving
simultaneously in two opposing directions. On the one hand, government
and big business continue to promote globalization and the consolidation
of corporate power. At the same time, all around the world people are
resisting those policies, demanding a re-regulation of trade and
finance—and, far from the old institutions of power, they’re starting to
forge a very different future. Communities are coming together to
re-build more human scale, ecological economies based on a new paradigm –
an economics of localization.

Resistance to further economic globalization has created powerful new
alliances: deep ecologists linking hands with labor unionists,
independent businessmen collaborating with small farmers. Now, at the
grassroots, localization is also bridging divides in a completely new
way – bringing people together across ethnic, religious, economic and
even partisan divides.

Come join the special Seattle screening of The Economics of Happiness
at Seattle Town Hall. The film will be followed by a panel discussion
with producer Helena Norberg-Hodge, authors David Korten (Agenda for a New Economy) and John de Graaf (Affluenza, Take Back Your Time), YES! Magazine Publisher Fran Korten, and Rev. Robert Jeffrey (New Hope Baptist Church, Clean Greens Farm).
