The 2010 Behavior, Energy and Climate Change Conference is the fourth annual conference focused on understanding the nature of individual and organizational behavior and decision making, and using that knowledge to accelerate our transition to an energy-efficient and low carbon economy. It will build on the overwhelming success of the 2009 BECC conference in Washington, DC, at which more than 650 participants discussed successful policy and program strategies, shared important research findings, and built dynamic new networks and collaborations.

                    BECC 2010
will bring together a diverse group of policymakers, social scientists,
program implementers, media, and energy experts to explore the practical application of social and behavioral insights to address our energy and climate challenges.
We will review recent behavioral research, discuss current and emerging
policy issues, share effective program/communication strategies, and
encourage collaboration across government, utility, business, and
research sectors. Our goal is to achieve viable solutions for meeting long-term energy and greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets by improving the design, adoption, and continued effectiveness of policies, programs, technologies, and individual/organizational actions.

International Rivers Conference 2010

Using the lessons of the past 20 years to look forward.

In September 1990 the Nature Conservancy Council organized an
international conference on ‘The Conservation and Management of
Rivers’. The international conference attracted 337
delegates from 29 countries.

By September 2010, twenty years will have elapsed since the York
conference. Much has changed in the world since then—economically, politically, culturally, scientifically. The 2010
conference will look back over this period and assess the changes
in river conservation—how the environment has changed, how the
legislation and policies that drive conservation have changed, how
organizations have changed, how techniques for practicing river
conservation have changed, and how public attitudes have changed.
What predictions were made in 1990? Which have been proved
accurate and which have not? What succeeded, what failed?

The 2010 conference provides an opportunity both to share
experiences over the last 20 years, and to use the
lessons of the past to look 20 years on into the future.

The conference, sponsored by the Joint Nature Conservation
Committee, Environment Agency, Scottish Environment Protection
Agency, Northern Ireland Environment Agency, Scottish Natural
Heritage and Natural England, will bring together all those with an
interest in achieving greater integration of conservation within
the management of river systems. It will provide a forum for
scientists, policy makers, water resource managers, engineers and
nature conservationists to:

discuss the theory and practice of river conservation

describe progress in different parts of the world

define appropriate strategies for the future

The emphasis of the conference will be on habitat and wildlife
conservation but will be set within the wider context of water
management. The meeting will have a broad, international
perspective, and will reflect the range of priorities within and
between countries in the developed and developing world.

Modeled after social forum gatherings around the world, the US Social Forum is a movement-building process, bringing together representatives from a wide variety of social change organizations and community groups across the country. In self-designed workshops, the attendees—including young people, people of color, workers, veterans, educators, and artists—develop bottom-up solutions to the economic and ecological crises we face. Groups are encouraged to join working groups and consider workshop proposals as early as possible. www.ussf2010.org

National Vacation Matters Summit

Aug 10-12, Seattle, WA. Come join the discussion of why more vacation time matters for America and what we can do to get it.

Vacations
are vanishing. Only 14% of Americans will get a vacation of two weeks or longer
this year. A third of women and a quarter of men get no annual leave anymore,
and many others are afraid to use their paid leave for fear they could be laid
off or demoted if they do. Because the US has no minimum paid-leave law, the average American vacation is now down to a long weekend (compared to Australians who have four weeks, Europeans with four to five weeks,
and the Japanese with two). An exciting lineup of speakers and presenters discuss why vacation time matters for America as related to specific topics like health, culture, and families. www.timeday.org
