Social Security and Gratitude
I am wondering if the Social Security proposals of the Bush administration will mark the turn around in public support for White House policy proposals. The American people evidently are seeing through a plan that does not fix a problem and may well create new problems. It may be dawning on people that ideology, rather than anyone's well being, is ruling at the White House.
Most of what's important on Social Security is being said by others (here's one of the best guides I've found). But I do want to point to one refreshing opinion piece by our own contributing editor, Jonathan Rowe. His essay in the Christian Science Monitor reminds us that we are more than a conglomeration of individuals each pursuing the best deal for ourselves. The reason to save Social Security isn't only for our own retirement or that of our parents (or children). It's a way to express gratitude. His article, The 'we' in Social Security, is a reminder of what happens when we reframe issues in a light that speaks to our highest aspirations instead of basest fears.
