Another anniversary

Today, as we remember those lost in the tragic attacks of September 11, there is another anniversary that we might also consider. 100 years ago today is the date when Mohandas K. Gandhi, then living is South Africa, launched the Satyagraha movement.

Satyagraha literally means "clinging to truth." The idea became the foundation of powerful, nonviolent movements, built on the intrinsic dignity and worth of all people.

These movements changed the world -- beginning in South Africa, then India, then the U.S. and elsewhere. On a day when we remember extremist violence, let us also remember those who responded to violence, not with more violence, but with dignity and "clinging to truth." Let's remember what they taught about the way to peace and justice.
