Sr. Audience Engagement Manager

Title: Sr. Audience Engagement Manager
Department: Audience Relations Team
Manager: Sr. Manager of Audience Relations
Status: Full-time employee, salaried, exempt
Location: Remote, U.S. (Pacific time hours)
Compensation: $70,000 to $80,000 DOE, plus standard employee benefits

YES! Media seeks an experienced engagement professional to help build and execute an audience engagement program designed to increase our reach, impact, affinity and revenue from our readers and supporters. For 25 years, YES! has published solutions journalism for a more equitable, sustainable, compassionate world, and there has never been a more exciting time to join the team. We’re growing, and the need for our work has never been greater. We believe a best-in-class community engagement program will serve as fuel for even greater growth and impact.

This is a unique opportunity for a creative, ambitious team player to help build a dynamic engagement program from the ground up. You will be tasked with establishing and leading a cross-departmental Engagement Team made up of members of our Audience Relations Team (ART) and Editorial Team to collaboratively develop audience engagement goals, KPIs, and both short- and long-term strategy.

You’ll also be responsible for managing day-to-day engagement operations, and creating authentic, inspiring opportunities for readers to connect more deeply with YES! and our content. The possibilities for engaging our current and prospective readers are endless — our live event series, YES! Presents, our commenting platform (Vox’s Coral), our robust social media followings, creative partnerships and outreach to communities featured in YES!, and new and exciting ideas we can’t wait to explore with you.

To do this work, you’ll have the benefit of building upon an adoring base of readers and supporters that have been authentically, lovingly tended to for 25 years by YES! staffers before “engagement” was even a thing in journalism.

The Sr. Audience Engagement Manager should be someone who is committed to advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion at YES! and in our external work and communications. YES! is actively working to build a more equitable, diverse, and inclusive culture that is safe, supportive, and affirming for all staff members regardless of race, class, culture, gender, sexual orientation, ability, and other aspects of individual and social identity. We expect that all staff engage in this work with us.

This position reports to the Sr. Manager of Audience Relations and sits on the YES! Audience Relations Team (ART), which is dedicated to increasing YES!’s reach, engagement, and revenue. The Audience Engagement Manager will also work closely with YES!’s Editorial Team to incorporate engagement opportunities into our content workflow, both pre- and post-production. Members of both teams will form a cross-departmental Engagement Team, which the Sr. Audience Engagement Manager will lead.

This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position, and is fully remote. Candidates must be authorized to work in the U.S., and willing to work during regular business hours on Pacific Time. Black, Brown, Indigenous, Asian, LGBTQ, and other people from historically excluded communities are strongly encouraged to apply.

Sound like something that would make you want to join our team? Fantastic — read on!

The ideal candidate is…

  • A self-starter with big ideas who’s unafraid of, and truly enjoys, the detail-oriented work of bringing those ideas to life
  • A true team player and leader, experienced with consensus-gathering and comfortable managing up, across, and down — with a strong bias toward action
  • An expert communicator with outstanding interpersonal communication skills and the ability to find common ground with people from all backgrounds and walks of life
  • Experienced with, and trained in, navigating and speaking to issues related to equity, diversity, and inclusion
  • A willing and thoughtful partner in YES!’s antiracism work by participating in racial equity trainings and supporting our ongoing efforts to build an equitable, diverse, and inclusive organization
  • Highly organized and able to expertly manage different bodies of work deftly, efficiently, and excellently
  • Comfortable speaking in front of audiences small and large
  • Passionate about journalism and audience engagement, studiously monitoring the work and resources of organizations like Gather, Nieman Lab, and others — not just to learn about the latest shiny activity or tool of the moment, but to glean information and tactics that may be relevant to YES!’s very specific set of opportunities and challenges
